Southern Magic Readers Luncheon

L to R: Christine Glover, Barbara Vey, Heather Leonard,
Pamela Mason, Debby Giusti and Lindi Peterson gather
Friday night before the Southern Magic Readers Luncheon.
Debby Giusti here!

The Southern Magic Romance Writers of America Chapter hosted a delightful readers' event last weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.

Friday afternoon, Lindi Peterson and I drove from Atlanta to the Embassy Suites Hotel in Homewood, a Birmingham suburb, where we met up with Georgia Romance Writer Pam Mason.

That evening we gathered with other writers and readers who had traveled from as far away as Louisiana to attend the event. Publishers Weekly Contributing Editor Barbara Vey was there, along with luncheon speakers Dianna Love and Sherrilyn Kenyon. We had dinner at a cute Greek restaurant and spent the evening talking about books and writing and the publishing industry.

The next day we headed to the lovely Harbert Center in downtown Birmingham where Love Inspired author Debbie Kaufman and I hosted a table.  My dear friend Julie Muscari sat with us, along with new friends Georgann Cox, Kimberly Callegan and Britney Wyatt.  Georgann's mother reads my books but couldn't come to the luncheon so I'm sending a special shout out to her today! I hope we can meet at the luncheon next year. Britney and Kimberly are friends who met on Twitter and then created a website to talk about the books they love to read. Check out their blog: www.living-fictitiously.blogspot.com.

Farrah Gibson won my basket, and Saturday was her birthday.
What a great way to celebrate!
The Southern Magic writers are so wonderful, and it's always a joy to be with them, especially for such a fun event. Thanks to President Heather Leonard and Luncheon Coordinators Lisa Dunick and Katherine Bone for making the luncheon so special!

Wishing you abundant blessings!

Getting Ready for M&M!

Debby receives her rose from GRW
President Maureen Hardagree,
celebrating her first sale.

By Debby Giusti
We’re into the countdown for the 30th Annual Moonlight and Magnolias Conference, hosted by Georgia Romance Writers. With over 40 workshops, this year’s event has something for everyone—from the writer just starting on the road to publication to the multi-published author.

I attended my first M&M in 1991with a completed manuscript in my suitcase. I was sure my story would sell, and when an agent requested the full, I thought I was on the fast-track to publication. Weeks later, I received a rejection letter and knew I had a lot to learn.

Where did I turn? To Georgia Romance Writers…

Every month, I attended the GRW meetings where I mixed and mingled with award-winning authors and industry professionals. The outstanding programs they presented taught me about craft and technique and the difference between a ho-hum manuscript and one that would be snatched up by editors and agents alike. Being with other writers who shared my dream for publication fueled my desire to keep working and never give up.

In March each year, I submitted pages to the Gin Ellis Workshop where published authors offered constructive criticism and suggested ways I could improve my story.  Eager to make those changes, I polished my submissions and entered them in the Maggie Award of Excellence.

My confidence grew, and my stories improved.  Soon, I began to final and eventually won contests, including the Maggie.

My road to publication wasn’t easy. I faced detours and obstacles along the way. Sometimes my progress slowed, seemingly to a crawl. At other times, I speeded too quickly ahead. Thankfully, if I took a wrong turn, someone from GRW would gently nudge me back on the right path.

Eventually, I received “The Call,” and my first book was published in 2007. Since then, I’ve written a total of eleven books for Love Inspired Suspense. I just landed another contract so I’m starting over again with new characters on an adventure that’s bound to be exciting. I’ll use the knowledge I learned from GRW as I push forward to the end. The road may be bumpy. I might get discouraged at times, but eventually, I’ll arrive at my destination.

GRW is the roadmap, the AAA TripTik, the Garmin that allows me to travel new and exciting routes with each story. Next week, I’m setting my course for the M&M where I’ll load up on more writing information and industry news that will help me navigate the road ahead.  I hope to see you there!

What road are you traveling to publication? What have you learned along the way? Who’s been your guiding light?

Happy writing! Happy reading!

THE COLONEL’S DAUGHTER
 UNDER SIEGE
A ruthless killer is targeting the families of soldiers in a U.S. Army
colonel’s brigade. Special agent Jamison Steele, of the Criminal
Investigation Division, vows to stop him—because this time,
Jamison’s heart is involved. The colonel’s daughter, the woman who loved and left Jamison without a word, came face-to-face with the murderer. Protecting Michele Logan means constant surveillance. And solving the mystery of the serial killer’s motive requires asking Michele the questions she least wants to answer. Questions that may lead them both into a deadly trap.

Countdown to the ACFW Conference!

By Debby Giusti

I’m flying to Dallas tomorrow for the American Christian Fiction Writers Conference. This past week has been busy, which always seems the norm before a conference. Probably because I’m cutting into my work time while away and have to double-up on my production schedule before I leave home.

Although busy, it’s been a fun seven days. Last Tuesday, I met with a local book club that selected my current release, THE COLONEL’S DAUGHTER, the third book in my Military Investigations series, for their monthly selection. The ladies—Carroll Pellegrinelli, Teri Sauer, Suzie Luciano and Aileen Friedlein—were so welcoming and had such kind things to say about my story.  Thank you, ladies!  Thank you, too, for the yummy dinner of chicken quesadillas, green salad, fruit kabobs and key lime pie.

For wonderful baked recipes, check out Carroll’s guide to desserts and baking at baking.about.com.
L to R: Teri Sauer, Debby Giusti, Aileen Friedlein, Carrol
Pellegrinelli, and seated, Susan Luciano.

Wednesday evening, I joined my own book club for delicious finger food and great discussion about our own monthly selection.  All of us attended a church retreat a number of years ago and have been meeting monthly since then.  Our upcoming selection is THE ALCHEMIST, by Paulo Coelho.
L to R front row: Elfi, Debby, Ginger, Gerry, Terry, Judy.
Back row: Dee, Tammy, Mary, Rita, and Joan.
Thursday, I blogged about Travel Tips for those attending ACFW. Check it out at http://seekerville.blogspot.com/2012/09/travel-tips.html.

The rest of the week, I worked on the first three chapters and synopsis of the fifth book in my series. This story deals with the army’s Wounded Warrior Program and has been rewarding for me to write. I mailed the pages late yesterday afternoon and posted this blog last night.

Today, I’m packing and attaching labels to small composition books that I’ll give away at the conference. If you’re heading to Dallas, be sure to say hello.  The best part of any writers’ event is meeting friends old and new.

Safe travel! Happy reading and happy writing.

Wishing you abundant blessings,
Debby Giusti

Guess What Appeared on my Front Porch?

Busy with the final rewrites for my next Love Inspired Suspense, I wasn't thinking of my August release until three boxes showed up on my front porch last week.  I quickly hauled the cartons into my kitchen and carefully cut through the tape so I could open the lids and peer inside.

Of course, you've probably guessed what was in the boxes!  Copies of THE COLONEL'S DAUGHTER, my tenth book and the third story in my Military Investigations Series.  The two larger boxes each contained 48 paperbacks, while the smaller box held three books in the new large-print, trade paperback size.

I had sent the Art Department a number of pictures of military quarters to give them an idea of what I would like to see on the cover.  Fort Rickman, the fictional Army post I created for the series, is located in Georgia, but the set of quarters I envisioned as I wrote the story is identical to a house at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where I had lived in my youth.

Not only did the Art Department provide an accurate rendering of the quarters, they also captured a feeling of suspense and intrigue, and added the heroine at the window as a bonus.

Love Inspired is celebrating their 15th anniversary in publishing. Congrats to the editors and staff, and a special thank you to my editor, Emily Rodmell, and the Art Department.

What do you like to see on covers?  Did you ever buy a book just because you liked the art work? Do you prefer still life covers or ones that depict the hero and heroine?

Happy writing! Happy reading!

Wishing you abundant blessings,
Debby Giusti

Reader and Writer Opportunities

The Seekers: (L to R) Debby Giusti, Sandra Lee Smith, Julie
Lessman, Mary Connealy, Cara Lynn James, Myra Johnson,
Ruth Logan Herne, Audra Harders and Janet Dean

This week is packed with fun opportunities for writers and readers alike.  Writers--and those folks who want to hang out with writers or learn more about how to craft a story--are challenging themselves to write a book in a month-long event called SpeedBo, AKA Speed Book, hosted by www.seekerville.blogspot.com.

Haven't been to Seekerville? The 13 Christian authors who host the blog provide great information about writing and publishing.  Since I'm one of the authors, I may be biased, but we do have a lot of fun, serve cyber-food that's always delicious and calorie free, talk about the latest trends and tips and techniques in publishing and support one another as we all try to perfect our craft and turn out better stories.  Plus, during March, we're pushing forward to write page after page after page until we eventually end up with a full-length manuscript.

Another reason to visit Seekerville?  We always have prizes.  During SpeedBo, the giveaways will be writing related, but at other times, we give at least one book away a day.

A fun event for readers this week is Barbara Vey's 5th Annual Birthday Bash, which celebrates the success of her Publishers Weekly romance blog, www.BeyondHerBook.com. Barbara's goal in life is to connect readers and writers, and her blog helps do just that.  Stop by to wish Barbara continued success, and you'll be entered in drawings for hundreds of books she's giving away this week.

On Wednesday, the Seekerville authors are hosting the party on Barbara's blog, donating numerous books and giving away a KINDLE FIRE. Thursday is inspirational genre day so you'll find many of your favorite authors celebrating with Barbara.  No matter when you leave a comment, you'll have a chance to win.

FYI: Barbara is hosting a Readers' Appreciation Luncheon on April 10, at the Oak Creek Community Center, in Oak Creek, WI, and you're invited. Check out the information at: http://www.barbaraveyreaders.com

Happy Birthday, Barbara!  Good luck to all the SpeedBo writers!

Wishing you abundant blessings,
